I'm up to over 57,000 words, and this story still doesn't have a title. I mean, other than "Operation Way Too Much Plot", or sometimes - depending on how I'm feeling at the moment - "This #$%^&*(*&^ Story".
So I'm resorting to quoteland.com for inspiration, and a few of these are giving me fic-related feels, although they're not really adaptable for titles.

"Lost love is still love." - Mitch Albom
"God gave us memories that we might have roses in December." - John M. Barrie (I know I've seen Roses in December used as a fic title multiple times.)
"You cannot love a thing without wanting to fight for it." - G.K. Chesterton
"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity." - Edgar Allan Poe
"I can only wait for the final amnesia, the one that can erase an entire life." - Luis Bunuel (Goosebumps!)
"Words pay no debts." - Will Shakespeare
"Everyone you meet is your mirror." - Ken Keys
"I think it is all a matter of love: the more you love a memory, the stronger and stranger it is." - Vladimir Nabokov
"He disliked emotion, not because he felt lightly, but because he felt deeply." - John Buchan

Date: 2012-08-08 05:53 am (UTC)I think there are a lot of good phrases in there that would make really good titles. When you look at any of them, do they scream STOP at you? Because then you'd know you were at least on the right track.
I do love quotes. I have notebooks and notebooks full of them. I don't know why. I just like to collect them!

Date: 2012-08-08 08:18 am (UTC)'Stronger and Stranger' did jump out at me a little, but it doesn't feel like a perfect fit, I dunno. Usually when I write longfic the title just kind of comes to me midway through, but so far nothing has popped into my head. In other words, it's a picky damn fic!

Without having any idea what your story is about (and I can't wait to read it), I love 'Words pay no debts.'

Date: 2012-08-08 08:35 am (UTC)I have discovered that giving people pre-emptive fic feels is very enjoyable and maybe I will make it my new hobby hmmm...
Usually when I'm looking for a title I go with a main theme or a repeated word/phrase. Probably the most repeated phrase in this sucker in the Russian proverb/saying "Debt is only beautiful after it's been repaid" (which I think was put forward as a promptathon prompt in a completely unrelated bit of awesomeness). I'm not sure how to turn it into a title that really speaks to me, though. Still, it's given me the idea that maybe I should go look at more Russian proverbs for inspiration.

Date: 2012-08-08 10:44 am (UTC)I collect snatches of lyrics, poems, and quotes in the hope that when I'm desperate for a title I have those to fall back on if there's no word or phrase in the fic that jumps out. A variation on that proverb - and yes, I remember it being a prompt too - or another Russian proverb sounds good. Will throw a poem at you too that springs to mind with your talk of history and memories and has been in my head since someone prompted scaring - it's in my head, I need to throw it at someone *grins*:
Kissing the stomach
kissing your scarred
skin boat. History
is what you've travelled on
and take with you
We've each had our staomchs
kissed by strangers
to the other
and as for me
I bless everyone
who kissed you here
(Micheal Ondaatje)
I just think with all the scars that I believe the two of them to have had, wouldn't they bless the strangers who left kisses instead of pain? And I love the idea of 'travelling on history' and taking it with you.
Anyway, yes, this has been a random poem comment. Carry on, you person with incredible writing mojo :D
