I just recently saw the movie, "The Thing" with Kurt Russell, and this episode must have been inspired by it. I bet Carter loves it.

I remember reading something to that effect. Plus the fact that they had been over budget with the first part of the season and were asked to do something self-contained that wouldn't require a lot of travel, fancy sets or special effects.
