Implant lets disabled man use his brain to do tasks

In what is being heralded as a potential breakthrough for patients with spinal cord injuries, a quadriplegic was able to open e-mail, change television stations and turn on lights with just his mind -- and a sophisticated brain sensor that translated his thoughts into actions.

Very cool.

How bloody wonderful is this!!! Last year I did a sixth month secondment in a special school where many of the kids there had cerebal palsy to varying degrees and used touch operated computers or head pointing devices. Although the computers they use do give them a voice to an extent it's a hugely cumbersome exersise and that's about the extent of what they can do. They have very little motor control in their limbs but this device could for the first time give them a voice and some degree of independence. They were a lovely bunch of kids and God I would so love to see them helped by this in some way. I'm going to forward the link to the head of the school.
