Bette Midler needs better drugs

"I could stand up here and talk for hours (cheering) about ineptitude, stupidity (louder cheering), blame, in-e-qual-i-ty, global warming (cheering), the dangerous destruction of the wetlands. But if I did, what will all those other people have to talk about? I'm telling you these are -- these are not just dangerous times, these are -- these times are disastrous. We're surrounded by disasters! The war, the hurricane, the Fox News. (cheering) It just goes on and on. I get so depressed! [...] A terrible thing happened to me. Today I got a letter from the Republican Party thanking me (boos) thanking me, thanking me for supporting this administration's policies. I did what any self-respecting American of integrity and class would do, I wrote "Go f*$# yourself!" (wild cheering) I sent it back! Postage due!" [...] I would never actually pick on George Bush, because, you know, he's a big fan of mine. He came to see me in the seventies, came to a show of mine in the seventies. A coke dealer of his, uh, got him some tickets, and... (cheers) Tonight we are here to be together, to help rebuild the Gulf coast, to help -- help rebuild the soul of America, the soul of America, New Orleans, New Orleans. We have to find a way to start listening to each other, to nature, and to the rest of the world, because who wants to live with so much danger."
So was this little tirade at one of her "shows"? On her website? Nope. It was at a concert for aid to Katrina victims. What, she can't get a camera on her any other way? Pathetic.

Date: 2005-09-22 06:23 am (UTC)I doubt that she was invited to just give her political persuasions to the crowd. But she has a right to say what she wants to say as much as Jon Stewart does on the Emmys. Just because she is an entertainer doesn't mean that she doesn't have viewpoints.
And half of those jokes were from "Kiss My Brass" - and I will agree that they were inappropriate. But her fans are known for loving her crude humour. Myself included.
And believe me - she can get cameras on her without that humour. So don't you dare call her pathetic for voicing an opinion. The government did NOT respond on time to the disaster, they did NOT respond for the quantity of the population, and their arms had to be TWISTED to apologise for it. That is her opinion.
Yeah - the Bush joke was friggin' stupid. It's old material, and not appropriate. I will grant you that. But you can't tell me that you don't agree that the situation is disasterous, and that she wasn't genuinely wanting to help. And the way I see it - that outweighs anything.
So if you disagree with that - I would lose a whole lot of respect for you.

Date: 2005-09-22 06:32 am (UTC)Sure, she has a right to say it. And I have a right to think she's idiotic.
And believe me - she can get cameras on her without that humour.
Maybe so. In the US... well, this is just the first I've heard from her in, oh, eons.
But you can't tell me that you don't agree that the situation is disasterous, and that she wasn't genuinely wanting to help.
Yes, I think the initial response was poor. I don't see what that has to do with cussing out the GOP, whining about Fox News, or making quips about the Prez being on drugs. It certainly doesn't help any victims of Katrina.
So if you disagree with that - I would lose a whole lot of respect for you.
Gee, what happened to having a right to an opinion?

Date: 2005-09-22 07:10 am (UTC)Darn right you do. And don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise. Freedom of speech works both ways, although that may be shocking to some who think freedom of speech means "you have the right to an opinion as long as its the same as mine."
It certainly doesn't help any victims of Katrina.
Which is why her comments were, indeed, as you said: pathetic.

Date: 2005-09-24 07:18 am (UTC)This isn't about the situation being disastrous (pretty sure Alli's smart enough to figure that one out), it's about the (bad) timing and (in)appropriateness of BM's comments.

Date: 2005-09-22 07:01 am (UTC)Yeah, and your blasting/insulting of the President and anyone who's a Republican two seconds earlier in your little speech is just gonna do wonders towards that goal....yep, yessirree....
