Am I an old fart or am I right to be pissed that some jackass is skateboarding down the halls of the White House while all this Iranian shit is going down?

We truly have succumbed to the idiocy of the MTV/Mountain Dew/Road Rules backward hat and baggy short culture. Did I miss something, or is the White House the future set for the next Real World? Where are the wallet chains? Is Hot Topic handling our foreign policy? Obama should be grounded for a week for letting Tony Hawk play in OUR house. Where in hell are the adults?

Look: Tony Hawk is in his mid forties. He's a grown man...and he skateboards. Could you imagine your dad or anyone who lived during World War II treating a man who skateboards with anything less than scorn and ridicule?

Right now, people are risking their lives for the glimmer of freedom, and Tony Hawk is in the White House tweeting about Frosted Flakes.

Someone please dig up Reagan. I'd take a dead leader with balls over a living camp counselor who wants all the cool kids to like him.

What a screaming joke.

Wow. Just... wow.

But first, a helpful tip:

They are speed bumps, not land mines. Unless you are carrying hazardous chemicals or an Ace of Cakes cake in the back of your minivan, you do not need to slow to -15 mph before going over a six-inch hump in the road.

Anyway.

I was going to post about this this morning, but I ran out of time before my doctor's appointment.

I woke up last night around 2:30am and there was this insane storm going on. Keep in mind that in this part of CA we don't get serious thunderstorms in the late spring/summer very often. Maybe 1-2, would you say, [livejournal.com profile] starfinn?

What was wacky about this storm was that there was no rain and very little wind, but tons of clouds and tons of lightning. I couldn't hear much thunder, either because of wind or altitude or the fact that my windows really shut out the noise. But there was soooo much lightning... like, a pulse every few seconds, and then once a minute or so a stronger bolt of lightning. I've always been fascinated by thunderstorms rather than scared by them, but this made me feel a little bit of both. I opened up the curtains in my room and watched it until it stopped.

On the way home today there were so many clouds in the sky, and all different species... it was like a huge cloud orgy -- fluffy clouds and dark clouds and clouds that look cut off at the top and feathery ones and clouds that are stretched out in stripes. I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] kismatt could tell us all the technical names ;)

A few random notes:

1. 300 wins for Randy Johnson! Yay! (Cain calls him RJ, that is so cute *G*)

2. Steven Crowder does Keith Olbermann! (Eww, not like that)

3. [livejournal.com profile] skydiver119, I can only speak for myself, but personally I never found disagreeing with Bush to be unpatriotic. But sometimes the same people who were doing the complaining were, in the next breath, saying other things that came off as sounding unpatriotic.

4. Jacqueline Carey is going to be in SF again this June! I got to see her last summer when she was signing for Kushiel's Justice and it was pretty awesome. [livejournal.com profile] seldear, I wish your visit coincided with hers :(

5. Okay, I think that's it.

Three airplanes from DC to NYC (one for the happy couple, one for aides and media), two helicopters to their destination, dinner and a Broadway show.

And all on the taxpayer's dime.

The White House (the most transparent administration eva) won't say how much it cost, but estimates have it at $24,000 at a minimum.

I guess he figured, since he was about to buy a car company, he could afford to live high on the hog.

Before Congress considers any form of government-run health care, they should hear the voices of patients denied care because the government deemed it too costly or delayed care because of long waiting lists for surgery or diagnostic tests.

Any serious discussion of health care reform that does not include choice, competition, accountability and responsibility — the four "pillars" of patients' rights — will result in our government truly becoming a "nanny-state," making decisions based on what is best for society and government rather than individuals deciding what is best for each of us.

And along the same lines, from Greg Gutfield:

So, it's official: Barack Obama is a bigot.

In a brave stance not seen since the beginning of time, a number of celebrities, journalists and bloggers have called President Obama out on his ignorant, narrow-minded views toward gay marriage.

First, it was renegade blogger Perez Hilton who, after noting Obama`s Christian beliefs, called our President a "stupid bitch." Shortly after that, pageant judge Alicia Jacobs rose up and said she would not have voted for Obama because of his intolerant and freakish views. Meanwhile, outspoken blogs like Queerty and Gawker have started using the b-word against Barack, calling him an out and out bigot. And then – out of nowhere – the Miss California USA pageant has urged Obama to apologize to the gay community! Finally - in possibly the bravest action of all, hard-hitting E News anchor Guliana Rancic tweeted that President Obama is an ignorant disgrace.

This is amazing stuff, people. By coming out against the President over his negative views on gay marriage, these folks are putting their livelihoods at risk.

Okay, they really haven`t actually said Obama by name. Instead, they focused their wrath on Carrie Prejean, the Miss USA contestant who views about gay marriage are entirely the same as President Obama`s. But if Prejean is a bigot for her views, and Obama holds the same views, then clearly Obama is a bigot too.

If A = B, and B = C, then A= C. I learned that when I was ten.

Of course, you won`t hear any of this from those brave voices I mentioned above. I guess views about gay marriage matter if you`re in a beauty pageant, but not if you`re in the White House. Or maybe these folks hold different standards for blonde girls than they do for black dudes.

Meaning, they lower the bar for Obama. Which you could call racist. After all, lowering expectations for someone because of who they are really is the definition of bigotry.

But I prefer not to think that way. Fact is, people like Rancic, Jacobs and Perez are heroes. They know how much tougher it is to beat up on a white Christian chick, than go after the most popular president since Morgan Freeman in "Deep Impact."

For that they deserve a pie of some kind.

I'm a teacher in the CA Bay Area, and I'm a conservative. Not always a comfortable thing to be. Take the election, for example. About half the staff were liberals who styled themselves as independents, or somehow above politics, but thought Obama was profound and brilliant and, well, above politics. Most of the rest were undeniably partisan, and the Palin jokes flew thickly in the staff room. At least one is a self-identified socialist. Then there was me.

I really don't care. I knew what I was getting into, politically speaking, when I entered this profession in this part of the state. And surprisingly, the thing I was worried about most - dealing with the teacher's unions, and serving my 'best interests' as an education vs my best interests as a citizen - hasn't come up.

Until today.

The gov't of California wants us to pass 1A in the May special ballot election. They call it something like the 'budget stabilization act' or some BS like that... basically, according to analysts, it builds up the state's "rainy day" funds by extending the recent tax increases for another 2 years.

We got a flier this afternoon exhorting local union members to support IA because, paraphrasing, then the district won't have a $12 million budget deficit! It's the magic pill, the solution to all our problems!

Being one of the 26,000 CA teachers who got pink slipped last month, that's pretty meaningful to me. But I have to stand behind my principles and continue to oppose it because what it means for the taxpayers of this state. Including me.

The thing that really infuriated me was this part of the flier:
[School name] staff needs to commit to a day for phone banking between April 27 and May 18. [Local union prez] has cell phones for us to use during this time. Instead of having to stay for a certain period of time, we just need to meet a call quota and then we get to go home. These are not cold calls. We are touching base with voters who normally are supportive of schools and just reminding them to get out and vote. There will also be a script for us to read. [Emphais added]

This just amazed me. I will continue to stand up against 1A, even if it means going up against co-workers on the issue, but the language here just amazed me.
