Puke.

For some strange reason, I'm watching Obama's (half-hour late) presser. Here's the translation:

"Everybody wants health care reform! We've managed to squeeze lots of money out of the pharm companies and hospitals. I mean, everyone knows that they don't need to make a profit. Also, nurses and doctors associations want reform! Woohoo! We all agree that health is good and paperwork is bad. If my wondrous plan passes, your life will be better.

"Oh, but we sort of have to pay for it, right? I mean I already have created such a huge debt, I guess it would be a bad idea to add even more to it. Congress is working really really hard to figure this out, so you can just stop thinking about it.

"By the way, under this plan, the government is going to decide what the "best" care is. We're going to put together a board of "medical experts" who will decide if what your doctor wants to do to cure you is "wasteful" or not.

"[Stupid race-running analogy.]

"If we don't do this, our children are going to be in-- um, even MORE in debt! We can't control government spending anyway! If we don't do this, no one will have insurance they can afford! And if you are against my plan YOU KICK PUPPIES AND STEAL FROM CHILDREN!

"I'm going to work my staff to the bone until they figure this mother out.

No questions."

you know.. during the campaign, I was under the impression that Obama's health care plan centered around opening up government health care to the general public. Meaning like, if you wanted to pay into a government health care plan, you could, and you'd get all (or at least most of) the benefits that government employees enjoy. And in turn, the cost of that plan would go down because more people would buy into it. I thought that sounded awesome. It gave people options, so that those whose employers (or those who are unemployed) didn't offer either a good plan or a plan in general could get health care...

but from what I've been hearing about Obama's actual plan, it seems as though the government wants to mandate health care.. and this seems a gross exaggeration of government. I'm all for more choices.. but Obama's plan goes way over the line.

Nope. Basically his plan is that a whole new government administration should be created which would be like medicare or medicaid, where you go get health care treatment from your doctor and your doctor turns around and files a claim with the govt to recoup the cost of treating you. This is a recipe for disaster --medicare and medicaid are ALREADY struggling because doctors and recouping less and less of their expenses from the govt, who just turns and says, 'sorry, we don't have enough to pay you'. So doctors either make less of a profit, or they stop taking medicare/caid patients. Some even stop being doctors, period. So now you have more patients, because no one will be turned down in a government plan, even if they have no income, and at the same time you have fewer doctors. Meanwhile, Obama's 'experts' are auditing the doctors that are still in practice because the treatment they want to prescribe for you is too expensive.

What I don't understand is how people can still think that government healthcare is a good thing. All we have to do is look at places like Canada and use common sense. But sadly common sense is on the way down.

By the way, government employees, like those in congress, have PRIVATE healthcare. They just don't pay as much for it in premiums -- those costs are picked up by the taxpayers.

these things always sound so simple on paper but never ever are. And that's sort of the problem.. b/c then government is like "well, it's all very complicated. you'll have to take our word for it that we know what's best".. but like, they really never do, do they.. and then they dumb things down to try and make it easily understandable but then major things get glossed over.

Oh politics.
