I'm looking for some ideas on how to cover composition books I'm giving my students to make them 'blank slates' for them to decorate/personalize, instead of the ugly mottled colors they are now. I know I've seen it done before with contact paper or something but I was hoping to find actual instructions online and, in this case, Google has failed me. I need something that's fairly inexpensive and not so difficult or time consuming that I will be cursing the very idea halfway through the twenty or so books.

Any ideas?

I remember when I was in school we used brown paper (like from grocery bags) and clear packing tape. It worked pretty well and then we could decorate our notebooks as we wanted.

I was thinking the same thing. You don't need to use paper bags; rolls of brown wrapping paper are relatively inexpensive.

I did this with all my schoolbooks. Fun to decorate, saves much wear and tear on the books!

Wait...you mean you are going to do this yourself? Why not have it be a quick class project if they don't know how to do it?

Well, it depends how difficult it is. These are only 4th graders ;)

Oh, it's not hard...it might be a fun class project. Have everything bring a paper bag from home, supply some scissors and you're set. :)

Yes, brown paper bags, and some elmer's glue!

Or, you could get some real funky looking contact paper (the kind you put down for shelf lining), cut those into strips, and decorate the composition books with those strips (from different designs). You can some from the 99 cent stores.

Or use the Sunday comic strip panels from the newspapers...they're bright and colorful. Snag some from your neighbors...or have the kids bring them in to school from home!

Or Reynold's Wrap (aluminum).

When's your first day? How exciting! Have fun...

When I was at school we put scraps of wallpaper on ours to stop them getting too tatty :)
