Oh man

I'm sure this will be floating around on the sports blogs, but I wanted to share cause I know people are out there who think baseball is some kind of wussie sport because the players aren't out there tackling each other and kicking each other in the head (well, not intentionally, anyway).

This happened tonight at our game against the Brewers. Last out of the night, we're up 7-1, relief pitcher Joe Martinez (a rookie who got his first win on Opening Day) comes in to close it out.

ETA: The clip has been yanked from YouTube, but you can find it here.

He went in for a CT scan and hopefully there will be news tomorrow. It's very good that he wasn't hit directly in the temple and very good that he never blacked out and was able to walk off the field under his own power. Still, you can see how completely stunned everyone was. The guy who hit the ball, Mike Cameron, is reportedly a really good guy, known around baseball for being a really good guy. They were saying after the game that he was shaking and couldn't talk to anyone. They interviewed Bengie after Medders got the last out and he looked pretty shaken too. I'm glad the game was basically over when it happened because I don't think anyone would have been able to concentrate.

Anyway, even if you're not a Giants or baseball fan, please direct some of your good thoughts and prayers towards Joe Martinez for a speedy recovery, his family, teammates and Mike Cameron as well.

Update:

Late Thursday night at St. Francis Memorial Hospital, Giants executive Bobby Evans told the San Francisco Chronicle that Martinez "has a concussion but otherwise seems to be OK."

"Evans did not want to get too specific, medically, but said that Martinez did not appear to have any broken bones, and tests did not reveal any serious injuries," the Chronicle wrote. "But they are keeping (him) in the hospital overnight for observation. You can't be too careful with head injuries."

The Chronicle added, "Evans said Martinez was up and talking and did not even seem to have a bad headache. Martinez spoke by phone with his parents in New Jersey, who unfortunately watched on TV as their son got hit."

I'm watching the Olympic baseball game - US vs China - on MSNBC. I think this would be the first time I've ever watched anything on MSNBC...

Seems like it was a very messed up game, which probably comes from the stupid rule of letting the host team qualify for everything, meaning that the Chinese team didn't know what the hell they were doing and even had to borrow an American manager. Of course when you don't have any control over your pitches and end up hitting 6 different batters, including plunking one guy in the head and giving him a concussion, that doesn't do a whole lot to foster international peace and harmony.

The commentators mentioned that there won't be any baseball in the next summer games, and probably not softball either. They also said that the reason the Chinese don't have a very good baseball team is because the government hasn't had a lot of interest in it. I guess that's what you get in a communist country... if the government doesn't think it's important, it isn't. Can you see the US complaining that we haven't won any medals in weightlifting because the US government hasn't had a lot of interest in it?

I decided that I wanted to go to a baseball game this weekend.

So I went to StubHub and bought two bleacher seats (second row) for about $13 each.

No, this isn't a commercial for StubHub. I just wanted to share my occasional impulsiveness :D

*scares the animals cheering*

I know it's only the 3rd inning... but 6 consecutive hits! A double for Bengie! A homer for the n00b! It's exciting!

ETA: 8-0 in the 4th.

Barry Zito, you suck.

I wanted to like you. When I met you during Spring Training, you were cute even if you were kind of emo, and a former As.

But yeah. Suck.

My television debut

I was on TV yesterday!

I went to the Giants/Diamondbacks game with my cousin, and we got to sit up by the chickens. For those of you unfamiliar with AT&T park, since Barry Bonds is intentionally walked so often (bastards), we keep a tally every time any Giants hitter is intentionally walked. I think this pic is from a couple of years ago:

So we were sitting up in that section when Barry was walked early in the game. And I got the chicken! The guy that brought it and the new numbers for the tally board said, "swing it around, you might get on tv". So I did, and I did! My aunt was able to Tivo it, and I'm going to see if I can somehow get it on the 'net.

UPDATE: Uploaded my pictures.

The view from our seats, during warmup:

Das chickens! Again, before the game.

After the game, kids 14 and under got to run the bases. I knew I brought Shelby for a reason!

(Larger)

After the game we went down to Pier 39 and took a boat tour of the bay (different company than we went with, [livejournal.com profile] seldear, but same idea. Out under the GG Bridge and around Alcatraz). This is the northwest (I think) end of the pier from the boat.

I took a crapload of pictures of the Bridge, but here's my faves.

The Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, is at the Giants/Astros game with the foreign minister of Australia.

They're both wearing Giants jackets, and the broadcasters, Kruk and Kuip, sent down an autographed ball.

I'm baaaack!

Back home from Arizona and Giants spring training. Whew! Here's the short version.

Thursday -- the flight from Sacramento to Phoenix started out well. We knew that there had been rain over the Phoenix area. What we didn't know was that the folks there were going to actually shut down the place around the time we were ready to land. We circled the runway for a while. Then the pilot comes on the PA and tells us we're going to Las Vegas to refuel.

So we land in Vegas, refuel, and wait to hear from Phoenix that things have calmed down enough that they'll let the planes land. Meanwhile there's some bitchy woman in the back with her husband and kid complaining that she wants something to drink (insinuating that it should be something alcoholic) and blah blah blah. Finally we get the call that our window has opened up, so we go and sit in line out on the tarmac. The woman bitches some more. At some point, either she calls or has the flight attendant call 911 for who knows what reason. We have to go back to the gate so the medics can check the wanker out. She storms off the plane and, according to what I overheard from the flight attendant, refused medical attention. Thanks to her, we lose our place in line, lose the window in Phoenix and have to wait about another two hours to take off.

When we finally get in at about 7 (we were supposed to land at 3) it is pouring rain. Our checked luggage is soaked by the time it gets to us. We have to wait in line close to 45 minutes for our rental car. We sorta get lost on the way to the hotel because there's construction all over the place. When we make it there, it's raining even more. The rooms are suites but they're all accessed from outside staircases. We were all pretty much drenched by the time we hauled our baggage up to the third floor.

By that time it was around 9:45. The hotel stops room service at 9:30. After a little hysterical stressed-out screaming, we located a Domino's pizza. Bless you, Domino's delivery man.

Everything else cut for length... )

Snow enters new phase in career: Gold Glove first baseman retires, joins Giants front office

I love my pookie, and I'm so glad he's back with the Giants -- in any capacity. And if he could wind up managing some day... wow. :)

Reason Dodgers suck #9,208: Their fans are lazy

Watching the game on FOX (icky) and like 3/4th of the seats are empty at the start of the game. A weekend day game. What the hell is wrong with these people?

I feel like I should be keeping a list of all the crap the announcers are saying about my boys

- Harping on Omar's age: "His numbers are good now, but will he run out of steam by the end of the season?"
- Our guy gets a base hit: "That was a pretty easy pitch to hit."
- Let's not even get into the terrible puns.

ETA: Ray just got a home run. #12 on the season. I'm waiting for these morons to declare, "well, I guess we know where Barry Bonds' steroids went!"

Notes: Alou bothered by Astros fans

HOUSTON -- The reaction of Astros fans to Barry Bonds being hit by reliever Russ Springer in the fifth inning of Tuesday night's game bothered Giants manager Felipe Alou more than the actual plunking.

Many in the crowd of 35,286 gave Springer a standing ovation after he hit Bonds. Springer threw all five pitches in the fifth inside to Bonds, the first one going behind him.

"It bothered me a lot because there's a lot of children here," Alou said before Wednesday's game.

Alou pointed out that the Astros have a child yell "play ball" into a microphone at the start of every game. "I don't believe that's 'playing ball,'" he said of the crowd reaction to Bonds being hit. "There are a lot of kids watching the game. I'm not talking about a guy getting hit. I'm talking about a standing ovation when it happened.

"If you don't have any feelings for the person or player [Bonds], you have to have some respect for what's going on. They've got to be respectful of the event. There's millions of people watching. I feel there's other ways to express your feelings." Someone asked Alou if he felt he compelled to defend Bonds. "I don't feel I have to defend Barry," he said. "The system defends Barry. Common sense defends Barry."

PRESEASON BASEBALL!

EEEEE!

Also, I somehow found myself agreeing to go out to some club tonight with Amanda (my cousin's wife; we're all pretty much the same age). How did that happen?

Also, BASEBALL!
