what separated WBP from a bunch of mental manipulation fic for me was that Natasha experienced a sense of loss with Aten being gone.

A little of that probably leaked in from the 'source material' that inspired the Aten twist, where the characters who are 'linked' actually become very close over the course of the novel. In the case of WBP, Aten was actually more Natasha than Natasha was herself, with her recent memories gone, and yet to Natasha, Aten seemed like the inexperienced, more innocent one. So yeah, it was a very interesting dichotomy to play with.

So bringing her back to lose her again would probably be too much of a punch to the gut, yeah.

Yeah. Godheads is scifi so there ends up being a way for both characters to survive, but that wouldn't work in this case. I think Natasha's biggest challenge immediately post-WBP would have been really reintegrating who she is an who she was, and having the Aten personality somehow resurface would have made that too weird. Not to mention it would have lessened Aten's sacrifice in the first place.

That said, the gleefully wanton "Time to screw it to somebody else!" attitude makes me really, really excited.

I am an emotional whumper. It is my blessing and my curse.

But I can say this: I'm pretty much going to love anything that a writer of your caliber writes without comparing to any other work

*blushes* Thanks. I think my best bet now is just to focus on making this story good albeit good in a different way. And it really is a different kind of story... even though there's still manipulation and angst and traveling (omg I'm actually really tired of the traveling) the characters are necessarily different than they were. There's also more of an ensemble feel, rather than it being strictly "Natasha and Clint and Steve as the sidekick and the others in cameos", which is an interesting challenge.

(also, it proves the universe evidently revolves around me).

Ha, me too apparently. Yak yak yak.
