Does anyone else find Guy Gavriel Kay's books to be somewhat pretenious?

I mean, I know literally nothing about the guy, but I can sort of just see him sitting at his desk writing and going "omigod this is so deeeeep!"

::waves:: I got partway through the first series, said Ehh and never finished. I gather he hasn't improved?

I've read a few of his later books and they're good, technically speaking, but I can never remember what actually HAPPENED in Tigana vs Arbonne vs whatever. I just don't feel really pulled in by the characters. I'm conflicted.
